The quintessential modern Greek experience flourishes day and night in Athens: staying up until sunrise, swaying to the intoxicating strains of songs about love and loss, ordering still more bottles of whiskey and wine.

January Love Letter

January could not have come at a better time for music in Athens, and to ring in the new year, Bar Guru is bringing the groove back with ska-punk-jazz group The Burger Project lifting it up every Monday. Danilo Memoli does a weekend show that ends with a jazz workshop on the 18th, and a two-day performance by critically acclaimed guitarist, Makis Ablianitis on Jan. 30–31 (bargurubar.gr).

Meanwhile, theatre has never been so surreal. The Tiger Lilies will be premiering their latest Brechtian-style street opera, Freak Show, from Jan. 13–23 at the Badminton Theater.  After that, the stage adaptation of Tim Burton’s 80s cult classic, Edward Scissorhands, will run for two weeks; you’ll find me singing along to both (Jan. 27–28, badmintontheater.gr).

In the midst of all that music and theatrical mayhem, I’ll also make my way down to the New Benaki Museum to see the Creative Photography in Archeology exhibition that looks at 150 years of archeological photography (benaki.gr). And there is no way I’m going to miss the AD Gallery’s exhibition of Greek art from the 20th and 21st centuries, the first exhibition that presents the works of both established and emerging Greek artists in one show, What Does New and Interesting Mean? It looks like I’ll soon find out. It runs through Jan. 24 (adgallery.gr).
