NIGHT+DAY Barcelona

Coming May ’09
Once a poor cousin of Madrid, Barcelona has firmly established itself
as a world-class destination in its own right. Famous for its avant-garde culinary scene, sensationally unusual architecture, forward-thinking design sensibility, and a certain spontaneous joie de vivre expressed in its street and nightlife scene, Barcelona is certain to intoxicate you. And a trip to Barcelona wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the legendary party islands of Mallorca and Ibiza.
January Love Letter
January is about as wintery as it gets here, but it takes a bit of chill to make certain venues come alive. Tapas bar El Bitxo (C/Verdaguer i Callis 9, 93.268.17.08) has been around for a couple of years, but owner Benedicte has only recently revolutionized her wine list to offer a fantastic selection of more than 30 bottles. Top recommendations are, naturally, the fruit of local vines: The Riojas are a heady set of reds ideal to wash down Bitxo’s creative and traditional tapas, which include fresh cheeses and ham from Catalan village Oix.
Continuing the red theme, do as others don’t in wintertime, and head down to the beach. New nightspot Red Lounge Bar (redloungebcn.com) is a ruby of a nightspot, whose large banquettes one can drape oneself seductively upon while knocking back excellent mojitos.
To top it all, the music is uncommonly good, particularly on Sundays, when DJ Tres Manos plays a vibrant assortment of quality house tunes.
