NIGHT+DAY Barcelona
Author: Suzanne Wales

Coming May '09
Once a poor cousin of Madrid, Barcelona has firmly established itself
as a world-class destination in its own right. Famous for its avant-garde culinary scene, sensationally unusual architecture, forward-thinking design sensibility, and a certain spontaneous joie de vivre expressed in its street and nightlife scene, Barcelona is certain to intoxicate you. And a trip to Barcelona wouldn't be complete without a visit to the legendary party islands of Mallorca and Ibiza.
December Love Letter
In a city this beautiful, it’s easy to get seasonal tingles. Clear blue skies and blazing sunlight ignite Barcelona in daytime, and enormous dangling snowflakes in blue, silver, and ruby red illuminate it at night.
One exhibition to get you in the spirit is held in the CaixaForum culture center (obrasocial.lacaixa.es). A breathtaking display of Renaissance art from the prestigious Uffizi Gallery (Uffizi.com) in Florence includes a luminescent painting of the Madonna and child by 15th century artist Sandro Botticelli. It’s free and likely to be one of the biggest art hits of the month.
For a Christmas concert you’ll never forget, try Handel’s Messiah sung in the spectacular surroundings of Santa María del Mar basilica on December 17–19 at 9pm. The church also provides the backdrop for internationally bestselling novel The Cathedral of the Sea, by local author Ildefonso Falcones. Tickets for the concert are €20 (telentrada.com). Get there early and grab a middle seat for the best acoustics.
