Behind Washington's buttoned-up facade is a thriving city that rocks late into the night. After touring the world-class attractions, enjoy a fabulous meal, then dance the night away at one of the city's sexy new lounges.

August Love Letter

It's the election, silly. As we crane our necks toward the national conventions and November's contest, Washingtonians everywhere are politically prognosticating: over fruity martinis on the patio at the ultra-cool Skye Lounge (skyedc.com), near the White House, between sets of Coldplay's concert at the Verizon Center (verizoncenter.com), or while watching classic films on the National Mall's Screen on the Green (The Apartment plays Aug. 4, Superman Aug. 11).

There's so much more going on in August, including the opening of new chocolate lounges and wine bars. Follow me to the Penn Quarter's CoCo. Sala (cocosala.com), barely three months old and already topping everyone's list, with its cocojitos and sexy servers. Bite into a buzz-worthy burger at the Good Stuff Eatery (goodstuffeatery.com), Top Chef contestant Spike Mendelsohn's just-opened Capitol Hill joint. Snag seats at the Legg-Mason Tennis Classic (leggmasontennisclassic.com), Aug. 9–17, to catch Andy Roddick in play. End the night at the hip Logan Circle wine-bar Cork (corkdc.com), praised equally for its food and its wines.

I'm also looking forward to autumn, which promises all kinds of change, including the arrival of Alain Ducasse's Adour, in the stunningly renovated St. Regis Hotel (stregis.com).
