Los Angeles is more than a city: It's a modern
metropolis that's come to stand for all things cool, hip and trendy. From the finest art museums to the newest dance
clubs and restaurants, LA has it all—and then some.
August Love Letter
It's summertime, and the living is easy? Not for me, living and dying in LA, where new nightlife destinations are popping up with the frequency of celebrity sex tapes. Mini-Me? Dios Mio!
I finally got to check out SBE's latest "hiptard" hang out: S BAR (sbe.com). The staff is hot, fresh-fruit cocktails are refreshing, but the DJ is downright "basura" (garbage). There's a fine line between ironic and idiotic, and he crossed it with Gloria Estefan.
Afterward, I stumbled down the Cahuenga Corridor to Kitchen 24 (kitchen24.info); the latest stylized all-night diner is a total scene (DJ, full bar, Danny Masterson sighting), and the food is tasty, cheap, and organic. Also, headed west to South (southsantamonica.com); the upscale sports bar/lounge is the perfect summer hunting ground for cosmo-sipping cougars and graying wolves in Ed Hardy clothing. The drinks are stiff, music's loud, and there's a whole lotta summer loving going on. I dropped into Alain Giraud's hot new restaurant, Anisette (anisettebrasserie.com), but it was booked (word is breakfast is a better bet anyway).
Thievery Corp.'s KCRW World Festival concert at the Hollywood Bowl (hollywoodbowl.com) was the perfect way to start the summer, but the can't-miss show of August is Radiohead (Aug. 24–25 at the Hollywood Bowl).
With upcoming openings of The Kress, Coco De Ville, and Ecco (LA's first eco-friendly bar), plus new restaurants from the owners of the Bowery (The Misson) and Table 8 (8 OZ), September looks to be just as busy. Pray for me … and my liver.
