Los Angeles is more than a city: It’s a modern metropolis that’s come to stand for all things cool, hip and trendy. From the finest art museums to the newest dance clubs and restaurants, LA has it all—and then some.

January Love Letter

Upon waking up from my holidaze I’m left with something far scarier than my credit card bill: reality. “Hope,” while inspirational, won’t even pay for a pint and a French dip at Cole’s (colesfrenchdip.com), Cedd Moss’ (of Seven Grand and Broadway Bar) rejuvenated Great Depression-era pub and grub.

In these Dickensian times we must be tighter than Katy Perry’s top at the Gridlock NYE’s party at Paramount Studios. After all, we capitalist pigs are bred to consume. So why not learn to conserve?

My big (low-budget) plans started off at Lil’ Dom’s (littledoms.com), a local favorite for East Coast ex-pats. Only two items on the old-school Italian menu are over $20. Better yet, Monday’s prix fixe menu features a three-course meal for $15 and a bottle of house vino for $10.

Everybody needs a low-key neighborhood Thai restaurant, but if you don’t have one you should adopt Nakarra (nakkaraonbeverly.com). The authentic dishes are tasty and moderately priced, plus it’s BYOB (with no corkage fee).

If you’re looking for a cheap, yet perfect, date then head to LACMA’s exhibition of Vanity Fair Portraits: Photographs 1913-2008 (lacma.org), which runs until Mar. 1. There’s also the hipster-ific Los Feliz Art Walk (losfelizartwalk.org), happening every 1st Friday of the month from 7pm–10pm, which is the best price of all—free.
