Old-world charm and new-wave attitude make London the quintessential city of the new millennium. Hip bistros, trend-setting restaurants, fine art, and a fabulous nightlife scene keep the city on the cusp of modern culture.

August Love Letter

Let's set something straight, shall we? While I agree that the highly changeable weather in the British Isles can never be predicted, the long-standing belief, seemingly universal, that we live under continual rainfall is completely untrue. At least not in August.

Summer's been a little slow off the starting blocks this year, but things are beginning to look promising. The weather's already provoking Londoners to strip off all unnecessary clothing, sit out in the midday sun (with or without mad dogs), and drink enough warm beer and Pimm's to forget about things such as sunburn. August provides plenty of opportunities to do just that with dozens of outdoor music festivals. These can vary from raucous raves to more sedate affairs and, while they're subject to the whims of nature, you can count on at least two things: great new music and a great atmosphere.

I'm looking forward most to Get Loaded in the Park (getloadedinthepark.com) on Clapham Common. The lineup and overall vibe last year was electric. This year, it's being headlined by the age-defying Iggy Pop, with some youthful support from ex Brit-poppers Supergrass, and no messin' songstress Kate Nash. Pack your sunscreen, shades—and umbrella—and hope for the best.
