Today's New Orleans isn't quite the city it once was, but its legacy lives on in the hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs, and hotels that have been rebuilt since the hurricane. NIGHT+DAY New Orleans celebrates the spirit of this spectacular city by taking you inside the old-school jazz joints, the hip new restaurants, and the neighborhood bars that make this city great.

August Love Letter

New Orleans doesn't measure the year in four seasons. In our tropical clime, we divide our lives into oyster season, Mardi Gras, crawfish season, festival season, and shrimp season. But summer … we know all about summer. In August, the town hibernates in air-conditioned caves (otherwise known as dark bars with Abita beer on tap). Two late-summer events lure locals back onto the streets: Whitney's White Linen Night (cacno.org) and Southern Decadence (southerndecadence.net). On Saturday, Aug. 2, the streets of the Warehouse Arts District will be snow-white when crowds dressed in white linen stroll among galleries to the beat of a local band. The month ends with Southern Decadence, often called the Gay Mardi Gras. It's no wonder that the organizers picked the height of summer, Aug. 28–Sept. 1, for dancing in the streets—cause most of the boys don't wear many clothes.
