Today’s New Orleans isn’t quite the city it once was, but its legacy lives on in the hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs, and hotels that have been rebuilt since the hurricane. NIGHT+DAY New Orleans celebrates the spirit of this spectacular city by
taking you inside the old-school jazz joints, the hip new restaurants, and the neighborhood bars that make this city great.
January Love Letter
Christmas officially ends on Twelfth Night, and New Orleanians mark the occasion with the annual Changing of the Lights. It’s time to pull down those strings of blinking red and green bulbs and replace them with strands of purple, green, and gold. That’s right, baby, it’s Carnival time (nola.com/mardigras/parades/)! The big parades cluster close to the final Tuesday, which falls this year on February 24. But Carnival season begins with Epiphany on Jan. 6 when the Phunny Phorty Phellows (phunnyphortyphellows.com) commandeer a streetcar and make a madcap run down St. Charles Avenue. On weekday afternoons in January, the beats of brass bands echo through the streets as the kids get ready for the parades. Offices break daily for a snack of king cake (gumbopages.com/food/dessert/king-cake.html), the season’s achingly sweet treat decorated with sugar dyed in Mardi Gras hues. And trips around town turn into unexpected celebrations when bands of costumed revelers pass by tossing trinkets.
