With dozens of white-sand beaches strung out along the glittering coastline, Sydney is a sun-seeker’s paradise. Combine that with a sparkling nightlife and Aussie hospitality, and it’s no wonder this city has become a favorite destination. And Melbourne’s eclectic mix of diversions—from a thriving high-end restaurant scene to artsy bars and clubs—offers some stiff competition. Check them both out and decide for yourself.

January Love Letter

The Sydney Festival dominates a calendar chock-full of music festivals this month. Grace Jones leads the Festival First Night on the 10th, Nick Cave will be there at All Tomorrow’s Parties on the 17th and 18th, and hot improv artist/singer Reggie Watts will wrap up the festival on the 31st. (Various CBD venues, sydneyfestival.org.au.)

Sydneyites will be getting their geek on at the Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination exhibit at the Powerhouse Museum (powerhousemuseum.com). The show, which runs through April 26, lets attendees see original costumes and models (including Luke Skywalker’s original landspeeder) as well as full-scale replicas, take a ride in a real-life hovercraft, and design and build a droid.

Finally, with 50+ events happening over the course of three weeks, Sydney will host the largest Lunar New Year festival outside of China (cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/cny/Default.aspx). This Year of the Ox will bring the launch celebration and New Year’s markets to Belmore Park on the Jan. 23–25, and the spectacular parade will take place at twilight this year on February 1.
