NIGHT+DAY Book Updates
Our books are published only 45 days after we
finish researching and writing each title (one of the fastest turn-around times in the travel guide industry), which means that our content is fresher and
more current than most other guidebooks. It's all part of our philosophy: The right place. The right time. It matters.
But our commitment to accurate, timely information doesn't end when
our books go to press. The updates to our entire NIGHT+DAY travel guide are available to download. Just select a city to download the update as a pdf. To stay up-to-date on the latest clubs, restaurants, attractions and more, subscribe to our
free newsletter.

Night+Day’s Top 5 New Openings
CHICAGO • Vertigo Sky Lounge • Magnificent Mile • Ultralounge
Housed on the 26th floor of the Dana Hotel and Spa, this outdoor/indoor lounge
isn’t technically in the sky. But the glass-walled terrace, which gives open (and,
yes, vertigo-inducing) views of the city, beats the scene at most skyscrapers. An
outdoor fire-pit comes off more sexy than quaint, and servers wearing hot pants
and heels push “welcome wagons” stocked with specialty cocktails, adding to
the Temptation Island vibe. Table space is limited, but you can still order sushi
and small-plate dishes that come from Ajasteak restaurant downstairs.

LAS VEGAS • BLT Burger • Center Strip • American
It’s official: Chef Laurent Tourendel can make a mean burger: seven ounces of
sirloin, short rib, chuck, and brisket, topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and
pickles. Milk shakes, such as the liquid Nutella-like Nut Job, or the sassy
Grandma’s Treat (spiked with Maker’s Mark), will rock your world, but the fried
pickles—wonderfully crispy, light, and salty—are the surprise highlight of the
menu. Equally popular at lunch and post-clubbing at Jet, this diner-like burger
joint has an edgy wait-staff wearing tongue-in-cheek T’s that proclaim, “Tip
waiters not cows.” If you want a seat in front of the action, grab a stool at the
circular open kitchen (but don’t complain if you come away smelling of beef,
lamb, and turkey). $

NEW ORLEANS • Rambla
• Central Business District • Spanish/French
The vibe captures modern Spain: half heavy wood and iron fixtures, and half
modern design and electronic beats. The menu at this recently opened tapas
bar in the International House hotel (see Hotel listing) is classic Spain (patatas
bravas, grilled octopus), classic French (steak tartare, Provençal mussels), and
a little Crescent City Creole (calamari stuffed with pecans and andouille
sausage). The expansive common tables in the center give the crowds, which
spill over at night from the trendy Loa Lounge next door, a space to mingle and
meet. $$

PARIS • Mama Shelter • 20th • Trendy (172 rms)
The St. Blaise quarter in the east of Paris is just edgy enough, but it also boasts
some of the last remaining cobbled streets in Paris, with hosts of bistros and
cafés long peopled by the artists and renegades of the 20th arrondissement. It
is here, opposite indy-music venue Flèche d’Or, that Club Med scion Serge
Trigano and philosopher Cyril Aouizerate have placed their winning hotel, Mama
Shelter. Designed by Philippe Starck, the hotel offers an urban adventure, a
walk on the wild side—well, kind of, while you know an iMac with free Internet
access and a well-mixed martini are never far away. What you have here are 172
well-equipped, sound-proof rooms of differing sizes with Starck décor, incorporating
graffiti-print carpets, surreal bedside lamps made from Halloween masks,
chic kitchenettes, and the aforementioned iMacs. There is no room service,
because downstairs is the fabulous Island Bar and restaurant, where you are
sure to make friends. Going-out tips—concerts, theatre—and weather forecasts
are posted on the lobby mirrors of each floor early in the morning. We also love
the shop, selling an amazing mix of soft-porn books, art-film DVDs, Kiehl’s skincare
products, and Napoleonic tricorner hats. Best are the terrace rooms, but all
are reasonably priced.

SAN FRANCISCO • The Embarcadero • South American
The United States has Emeril Lagasse and Bobby Flay; Peru has superstar chef
Gaston Acurio. Acurio is famous in South America as not only a celebrity television
chef, but as a talented restaurateur who’s elevating his native cuisine to
new heights. At La Mar, his first restaurant in the US, diners can sample the
likes of punchy ceviches, tiraditos (Peruvian sashimi), and other traditional
dishes with a modern twist, all while overlooking the bay. And did we mention
there’s a pisco bar serving pisco sours and pisco punches (which was created
right here in, you guessed it, San Francisco)? $$
