Best Neighborhood Shops
Los Angeles
Fred Segal 8100 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, 323-651-4129 ronherman.com
The Draw: Hollywood’s young, rich, and restless max out their daddies’ credit cards at this ivy-covered boutique that is synonymous with hip, trendy, and celebrity. The Scene: Being in LA and not shopping at Fred Segal is like going to Las Vegas and not going to a casino. The store is actually a collection of high-priced boutiques, featuring hot (Ron Herman) and local designers. Plus, it’s swarming with more celebrities than Promises Rehab Center, so you can get some prime TMZ watching in at the bustling café inside the store. Hot Tip:If the guilt of buying a
$300 pair of jeans is too much, hold out for the store’s annual sale (October),
which offers discounts of 50%. As the weeklong sale goes on, stuff gets picked
over, but the discounts increase to 75%.
Kitson
115 S. Robertson Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310-859-2652 shopkitson.com
The Draw: This beyond-hyped boutique has every “it” item (handbags, logo T’s, boots) as seen (advertised) on the pages of Us Weekly or People magazines. It’s overpriced and trendy, but if LC and Heidi Montag are wearing it, it must be cool, right, right? The Scene: The tabloid’s usual suspects (Lindsay, Britney, The Hills cast) come to this one-stop shop for all things hot… at least to Paris. Hot Tip: You can find discount deals at the Kitson Outlet store (315 S. Robertson) down the block. The garage saleństyle setup has stock from all the Kitson stores (including Kitson Men’s and Kitson Kids). A lot of it is bottom-of-the-barrel stuff, but occasional diamonds in the rough can be found in between the The Hottie and the Nottie DVDs and Rachel Zoe books on style.
Undefeated
112 1/2 S. La Brea Ave., Hollywood, 323-937-6077 undftd.com
The Draw: You know you’ve made it in LA when you’re name-dropped on Entourage. Turtle, DJ AM, and David Beckham are just some of the many “sneaker heads” who come here to pick up the latest, greatest, and rarest kicks out there. The Scene: The tight, narrow space may be shoebox small compared to, say, the local Footlocker, but the quality, not quantity, of the shoes makes Undefeated the definitive sneaker store in LA. (Same for its sibling stores in Silverlake and Santa Monica.) Hot Tip: Word of release dates for limited editions (Nike Dunks) travels fast, so stay on top of things by signing up for the e-newsletter, which tells of upcoming release days ahead of their arrival.
